The color is a little distracting, but the moments are very nice. Not your typical setting.

WPJA PHOTO CONTEST WINNING IMAGES - FIRST HALF 2003

1st Place - Emotion - Eric Francis / Nebraska

Photo © 2003 by Eric Francis

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

A very touching photograph that celebrates the importance of family. It is also a sad photograph that shows two lives being lifted to new heights while another slowly fades away.

Such a tender moment coming from the kisser.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S COMMENTS:

When I heard that the wedding party would be heading to the hospital to visit their grandma who could not make the ceremony, my mind began running with the photo ops. "I hope there's a window", "what side of the bed will they go to?", Sh#$, I'll have to get into the room first!" Grandma met her right inside the door as I was stuck in the doorway. I had to "hail mary" it around the bride when I saw her bend down to kiss the ring. THANK GOD (er Canon) FOR 8fps!!!

1st Place - Humor - Eric Francis / Nebraska

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Great behind the scenes moment between the bride and a bridesmaid. While its funny to look at it also portrays any bride’s desire to look her best on the day of the wedding.

This image had a nice expression from the bride. This works as a nice unusual pre-wedding photo.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S COMMENTS:

This one was a no-brainer. It was taken after the cermony. She had been messing with and complaining about the dress all day. I probably have 30 pictures of her pulling her dress up during the day, but, this one really caught her feelings about it.

2nd Place - Details - Eric Francis / Nebraska

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

A great bit of foreground/background work with the flowers sharp in the foreground and the ceremony falling off in the background with a good use of shallow depth of field. Quick thinking while the ceremony is in progress.

The photograph got a nice low angle and used selective focus to make this interesting photograph. This was a different approach to shooting a ceremony photo.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S COMMENTS:

As I was getting ready to shoot the standard "down- the-aisle-from-the-back" image, I noticed the flowers. I prefocused, turned on the flash, set the camera on the ground, shot a few frames, checked it in the back of the camera and moved on. It really stood out in the edit though.

2nd Place - Ceremony - Eric Francis / Nebraska

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

Flawless image. It rose far above the rest of the entries. A wonderful moment; with great composition and use of light. An instant winner from the first look.

This image had a terrific quiet mood. The photographer made a nice choice of being behind the couple. The composition works even though the subjects are more or less centered.

Technical flaws of the photographed are transcended by a sensitively captured quiet moment.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S COMMENTS:

This is one of those Cartier Bresson moments. The bride and grrom were getting ready to head out of the sanctuary and greet their guests and families. For some reason they decided to stop for a moment and share some rare wedding-day alone time and everything came together in an instant. The couple, the moment, the doorway, the flag. This is why I
love having a camera in my hand!

2nd Place - Kids - Eric Francis / Nebraska

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

The color and composition of this image as well as the boredom of the little girl creates a nice scene. The repetition of the flowers and the photographer’s choice to not include the women’s faces was well done.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S COMMENTS:

KIDS!!! You can always count on them do do something for you. You should always keep one eye on them during the ceremony. The fact that so many of them manage to stay up on that stage amazes me. This one just came together the instant I put the 300 on her.

4th Place - Getting Ready

Photo © 2003 by Eric Francis

JUDGE'S COMMENTS:

The photographer was able to look past the more obvious possibilities of the bride and groom and get a nice photograph that incorporated good use of space. The jacket hanging on the door adds another story telling layer.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S COMMENTS:

As I said before, keep one eye on the kids. The girls were getting ready in the bathroom. I was shooting away and noticed the boy was gone. I wandered toward the back of the restroom and there was mom, dressing him in a stall. Coat hung on the door. This was another easy one.
