2003 WPJA WEDDING PHOTOJOURNALISM CONTEST CATEGORIES

Categories for this contest (descriptions below) :

01. Getting Ready
The behind the scenes preparation work on wedding day.

02. Ceremony
Can be from the limo/transportation arriving at the ceremony site through the receiving line.

03. Reception
From cocktail hour until the last dance/departure.

04. Kids (being kids)
Candid images of children doing what they do best.

05. Details
Tighter shots on some of the texture of the day (clothes, rings, tables, flowers, faces etc.)

06. Action
Peak Action...this is a key moment.

07. Emotion
Full range of emotions accepted in this category.

08. Humor
Ho, Ho, Ho!

09. Artistic (digital manip., slow shutter, obscure)
No rules here...just don't add text or border treatments.

10. Sequential (3 images from same situation) NEW
Looking for three strong images from the same general time. Use Photoshop to combine the three images into one submission. Keylines (thin borders) around the indidual images are accepted ONLY in this category (to separate them visually). Can be used in Multiple Picture Story category and count as only ONE entry (image would be submitted twice and paid for twice).. A single image from the 3 in this entry can also be used in another category.

11. Architecture (interiors & exteriors of churches etc.) NEW
Can be church exteriors or cool stained glass inside...find the beauty in the ceremony buildings or reception sites.

12. Using Available Light REVISITED
We are giving this category another chance. It was tried in 2002, but many photographers did not enter images where they were really 'USING' the available light...many were just images with the flash turned off.

13. Multiple Picture Story (up to 15 images) NEW
Photographers can enter up to 15 images from THE SAME WEDDING as ONE SUBMISSION into this category. Limit one 'Multiple Picture Story' entry per photographer. Entry fee is reduced to $5. per image for this category. More points will be awarded to First (30 points), Second (25 points), Third (20 points) and we are adding 2 Honorable Mention slots to THIS CATEGORY ONLY (worth 10 points each). Images entered as part of a 'Multiple Picture Story' submission may also be entered in other contest categories provided additional payment is made for the second category (those images would be submitted and paid for twice).

This category will be awarded to the photographer that can incorporate the best images from the most WPJA contest categories into one wedding.

*Any wedding from Jan-Dec of 2003 is eligible even if some of the images were previously entered in individual categories from the first 2003 contest.

**Submissions into this category only count as one entry.

***Sequential images (category #10) into this category counts as ONE image not THREE.

14. Engagement Portrait NEW
Many WPJA members are offering engagement shoots in addition to wedding photography. Here is an opportunity for us to share some creative portrait work.

15. Portrait of Bride AND Groom
Does not have to be posed. Although, photographer may pose/suggest/urge couple for this category.

16. Portrait of Bride OR Groom
Does not have to be posed. Although, photographer may pose/suggest/urge...

17. Portrait of Bridal Party
Does not have to be posed. Photographers can experience a lot of anxiety obtaining this one :)

18. Portrait of Kid(s) NEW
Does not have to be posed. Although, photographer may pose/suggest/urge...
